ST PATRICKS DAY - A BIT OF HISTORY  from Sharon Roth

St. Patrick was born in Britain (not Ireland) to wealthy parents near the the end of the fourth century.  He is believed to have died on March 17, around 460 AD.  When Patrick was 6 he was captured by Irish pirates from his home in Britain and taken as a slave to Ireland, looking after animals. He lived there for 6 years before escaping and returning to his family.  After 15 years of training, he became a cleric and in later life served as a bishop.  His mission was to minister to Christians already living in Ireland and converted others around the island to Christianity.

Many of the stories traditionally associated with St Patrick, including the famous account of him banishing all snakes from Ireland, are false, the product of hundreds of years of exaggerated storytelling.  Legend does credit Patrick with teaching the Irish about the doctrine of the Holy Trinity by showing people the shamrock, a three-leaned plant, using it to illustrate the Christian teaching of the three persons in one God. The shamrock has since become a central symbol for St. Patrick’s Day.

St Patrick’s day questions (answers on last page)

  1. How can you tell if an Irishman is having a good time?
  2. Why can’t you borrow money from a leprechaun?
  3. Why is Ireland the fiesta growing country in Europe?
